For example, species that depend on forests as their main habitat, such as orangutans, face the threat of extinction. Not only that, climate change also increases the threat of invasive species. As temperatures change, many non-native species can thrive in new areas, outcompeting native species in terms of competition for resources. For example, invasive plant species often displace native species, which reduces biodiversity and disrupts the balance of the ecosystem. Furthermore, climate change is worsening the species’ health conditions. For example, animals living in certain areas may not be able to adapt quickly to changes in temperature or habitat quality, increasing the risk of extinction. In the aquatic world, higher temperatures can trigger the bleaching of coral reefs, resulting in the loss of habitat for thousands of marine species. Changes in rainfall patterns have other impacts on biodiversity. Some areas may experience increased rainfall, potentially causing flooding and a decrease in soil quality. On the other hand, areas experiencing decreased rainfall face drought, which can disrupt the lifestyles of terrestrial species and agriculture. This worsens food security and ecosystem health. The food chain is also disrupted due to climate change. Predator and prey species can lose balance due to shifts in habitat distribution. When one species is disturbed, its impacts can spread throughout the ecosystem, affecting interactions between species. For example, if pollinating insects are reduced due to unpredictable weather, plants that depend on these insects for reproduction are also threatened. But it’s not just the negative impacts that are felt; there are also some species that can adapt well to these changes and even thrive. However, the species that are able to adapt tend to be limited and do not represent all existing biodiversity. This means that the chances of losing some species that cannot adapt are very high. With global warming continuing, biodiversity around the world is in a state of emergency. Protection efforts need to be carried out immediately, starting from habitat conservation, overcoming invasive species, to increasing public awareness. Avoiding dependence on fossil energy sources and promoting sustainability are important steps in preserving biodiversity. Continued research in the field of ecology and climate change is essential to further understand these impacts and find effective solutions.
