A casino is a gambling establishment that offers various forms of gambling, such as slot machines and table games (like poker, blackjack, and roulette). Most casinos also feature entertainment shows. In order to gamble, patrons must be of legal age and follow the rules and regulations set by the casino.

Gambling in some form has been part of human culture for millennia, with evidence dating back to 2300 BC China. Dice first appeared in Rome around 500 AD, followed by card games in the 1400s and, in modern times, baccarat. Modern casinos often offer multiple versions of these classic games, as well as newer ones like craps and roulette.

Due to the large amounts of money handled within a casino, both patrons and employees may be tempted to cheat or steal. To prevent this, most casinos employ several security measures, including cameras.

In addition to cameras, many casinos use electronic systems to supervise their gaming floors and machines. For example, some tables have chips with built-in microcircuitry that interacts with other electronic systems to enable casinos to track the exact amount of money wagered minute by minute and warn them of any statistical deviation from expected results.

Casinos are found all over the world, with most of them located in cities with large populations of people interested in gambling. The largest casinos are found in Macau, the Philippines, and Las Vegas. In the United States, the first casino opened in Atlantic City in 1978, and casinos soon began appearing on American Indian reservations, which are not subject to state antigambling laws.
