The history of tsunamis includes a number of natural disasters that have changed the face of most coastal areas around the world. One of the most famous tsunamis occurred on December 26, 2004, when a magnitude 9.1 earthquake rocked the Indian Ocean, generating waves that devastated many countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. It is estimated that more than 230,000 lives were lost in this disaster, making it one of the deadliest and most destructive tsunamis in history.<\/p>\n<p>In Japan, tsunamis also have a long history. One of the most significant events was the Kanto Tsunami in 1923, which occurred after a magnitude 7.9 earthquake. The impact was felt, with more than 140,000 people dead and widespread damage in Tokyo and Yokohama. This tsunami not only caused physical damage, but also changed the social and economic dynamics of Japanese society at that time.<\/p>\n<p>History records that tsunamis are not a new phenomenon. In Ancient Greece, earlier records of huge waves have been documented. However, human understanding of the causes and impacts of tsunamis was still very limited until the mid-19th century. In 1868, after a tsunami caused by an earthquake in Peru, scientists began to realize the connection between earthquakes and ocean waves.<\/p>\n<p>The impact of a tsunami varies greatly, depending on location, strength and coastal topography. In Indonesia, the 2004 tsunami led to years of rehabilitation, highlighting the need for an effective early warning system.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the physical impact, the tsunami also brought about profound psychological changes. Survivors often experience trauma, loss of family members, and difficulty restarting their lives. Research shows that post-traumatic mental illness is increasing among survivors.<\/p>\n<p>In the context of climate change, the tsunami issue is increasingly relevant. Increasing ocean temperatures and weather changes can contribute to the frequency and intensity of natural disasters. Therefore, studying past tsunami events is very important to estimate potential threats in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Mitigation measures are very necessary to reduce the risk of tsunamis. Effective early warning systems, public education, and mapping of high-risk zones must be prioritized. Some countries, such as Japan and the United States, already have very sophisticated systems for detecting and providing early warning to the population.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from that, international cooperation in the field of research and technological development is also important to face the tsunami challenge. Forums such as the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) play a key role in building a global network for tsunami monitoring and mitigation.<\/p>\n<p>Tsunamis have been a part of human history, providing valuable lessons about the power of nature and the importance of preparedness.
